Compliance is an All-Team Activity

Keys to Preventing Violations:

  • Compliance requires strong communication and trust between shipboard staff and shore staff. Personnel must be able to share issues, challenges, and needs without fear of criticism or punishment.
  • Compliance comes naturally when building an effective “compliance culture” in which all hands understand that violating compliance requirements is simply not acceptable as part of the seafarer’s ethic.
  • Shore staff must work with crew to provide the resources needed for compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • They also must be aware of indications of compliance risks and avoid creating undue pressure that incentivizes non-compliance.
  • Finding the root cause of violations or other incidents is critical to organizational learning – to find out not only what happened, but why it happened, and what the ship manager could do to avoid repeat incidents, notwithstanding human errors and mistakes.
